STaR Chart Opinion

In the area of teacher preparation and development our campus is at the developmental level. This means that only 40% of our teachers are currently meeting the SBEC standards and that only 6-24% of our technology budget is being used for staff development. Our ultimate goal is to have around the clock access to online resources for teachers, parents and students. We should be working to ensure complete alignment with the technology TEKS set forth by the state of Texas. Another goal of the 2020 technology plan is to make sure that 100% of all teachers are meeting the SBEC standards and at least 30% of the technology budget going to staff development.

In my opinion our campus and state has a long way to go to reach the standards that have been developed in the long range plan. There is a great demand for teachers to be in a continuous cycle of being updated on the most recent technology if they are expected to model the use of technology, integrate technology into lessons and ensure that students will be able to make good use of technology when they are ready to go into the workforce.
There is a district wide issue with technology staff development. At the state, district and campus levels incremental improvements are being made to better meet the needs of teachers and therefore meet the needs of our students, as well as, the state goal by 2020. I believe that we need to concentrate on making sure that the technology is staying as current as possible in our schools and that the necessary training is made available for teachers and students.

Technology Applications TEKS Summary

The foundational, information acqusition, communication and problem solving TEKs are very similar in the requirements on students. Students are expected to use the various components of a computer and to respect the laws that go along with internet use. They are expected to put out products that are intelligible and credible. This is true of every level of TEK, students are expected to intensify the level at which they display these skills as they get older. The older and more proficient they become with the use of technology the better they should become at these skills.

Key Ideas of the Long-Range Plan for Technology

The overall plan is for teachers and students to master the use of technology, in an effort to make the educational system more effective and efficient.

The workforce is in a continual state of change and therefore the educational system must attempt to keep up with these changes in an attempt to keep students knowledge base where it needs to be so that the economy does not falter.

The 21st century student must be an analytical thinker in order to keep up with the information that will be required of them in the workplace of the future.

It appears that in Texas schools, teachers have come to a general consensus that more staff development and more access to computers for students is needed. With these two things added it will make learning more engaging for students and teacher will have more opportunities to expose students to learning that would normally be impossible.

The process of teaching and learning with technology evens the playing field for all Texas students. All students no matter the ability level, disability or financial status will be able to see and experience new learning through technology.

Today’s educator preparation programs must work to ensure that they are graduating teachers with the skills necessary to incorporate technology into their lessons when they enter the classroom. There should also be opportunities for seasoned teachers to improve their technological skills through distance education and staff development opportunities.

Administrators must configure a group of stakeholder that will come together to ensure that state technology standards are being met, as well as, come up with a plan to support the vision of the administrator. The group will also need to come up with a plan that will support the technological system in case of an electrical emergency. There must be a collaboration to ensure that the standards and requirement changes are always being considered. The administrators must model the use of technology and ensure that opportunities are available for staff to develop their technological skills.

The infrastructure will ensure the opportunity for all stakeholders to access critical information at anytime of the day or night. The infrastructure will make sure that the material presented is reputable and functional while still allowing room for growth in the students.

The study found a need for funding to maintain and enhance the current technology plan. There is a need to prolong and enhance the current programs and maintain opportunities for teachers and students to continue to progress toward the 2020 goal that has been set forth.

Technological Savvy

My Technology Applications Inventory shows that I still have a long way to go to become technologically savvy. In the area of foundations I answered yes to 10 out of 18 of the foundation survey questions. I believe that this shows that I have some learning to do about the foundational systems of school technology. For Information Acquisition I answered yes to 4 out 10 of the survey questions. I realize that I still have quite a bit of information to learn. I answered yes to 9 out of 19 questions on the Solving Problems section of the survey. In this section I think that I can probably do more than I gave myself credit for, but I am unsure about some of the things the survey is referring to. For the Communication portion of the survey I answered yes to 7 out of 11 of the questions. This tells me that I am able to communicate through the use of technology fairly well.

The SETDA survey that was most appropriate for me was the teacher survey. The survey showed that my school has a lot of work to do to get where we need to be to meet the technology standards that have been put in place. I don’t see my district tracking the data in an effective way for teachers or students. We are, however, moving in the right direction, howbeit slowly. I believe that we have a ways to go to catch up with the ability levels of our students. Youth today are a lot more technology savvy than the teachers and administrators. Our students get the use of computers maybe once a week. We have computer class that the students rotate through every nine weeks for three weeks at time, if they are not in tutorials. We also have a mobile lab but there is only one and there are only enough lap tops for one class to use. We have also added Elmo’s, cows, calf’s and smart boards. Where all these things are wonderful there are not enough of them to go around. Every teacher does not have the opportunity to benefit from this technology on a daily basis. As a district we are making great strides but we still have a ways to go to meet the needs of our students.

Technilogical Savy
